With thousands of vibrations and movements per minute, the electric toothbrush is an effective way of getting teeth truly clean. It can also lead to naturally whiter teeth without having bleach or other whiteners applied. It was invented by Philippe G. Woog for E.R. Squibb and Sons in 1954. The toothbrush then hit the market in 1959 through the American Dental Association and store shelves a year later.
Although Woog only has the one listed invention, his employer, which eventually became Bristol-Myers Squibb [BMS], has been responsible for a number of incredible inventions over the years. Here is just a brief look at them.
1. Hepatitis C Treatments
One of the most difficult diseases of the liver to treat is Hepatitis C. It’s a contagious disease and the virus can remain in the body to create chronic disease and liver problems that last for the long-term. Once someone gets any version of Hepatitis, it is possible to get the other types as well. There is no vaccine for Hepatitis C as of yet, but BMS has patented a novel treatment for this virus that includes pharmaceutical salts.
When people are struggling with heart or circulation problems, one of the most effective ways to prolong life is to thin out the bloodstream. For low level issues, daily aspirin therapy can work. For a more permanent solution on a higher scale, however, Coumadin can create effective, safe circulation that is properly monitored by a doctor.
This drug is administered to patients after they have had a heart attack. It prevents blood clots from forming because it prevents the platelets in the blood from coagulating. Some stroke victims may also be a candidate for using this drug, as well as certain disorders that can strike the circulatory system. It’s also sometimes given in drug combinations to treat medical issues that aren’t related to the primary uses envisioned by BMS.
This drug is used to treat certain cancers and sickle cell anemia. It can be used to reduce pain that comes from these diseases and is effective enough that it can prevent the need for a blood transfusion in some cases. As for cancers, it is primarily used to treat chronic forms of leukemia, ovarian cancer, and certain skin cancers of the head and neck.
Some diabetics require greater control of their blood sugar levels, especially those with Type 2 diabetes. What this drug does is dramatically reduce blood sugar levels while working with other items, such as insulin, to better manage the disease. The one issue that comes up when taking this drug is that it interferes with the dyes that are used for medical imaging and it can build up the lactic acid in the muscles to a fatal extent.
